Blog Pages and Blogging

Blogs and wikis were invented at about the same time.

They do pretty much the same thing - let you, the reader, write pages on the internet without setting up your own website. We will look at those differences between them.

Wikis were invented for many users to read and write the same web page.

Blogs were invented for one user to read and write many web pages.

Both now let many users read and write many web pages but they do it different ways. Those differences all come from the original idea behind them.

Let's look at a couple and see.

Task One - Investigate some blog pages

We have been using wiki pages for some time now.

At this stage of the course, each of you should be an expert wiki user. Those who have set up their own wiki are on the way to being a full-scale expert on wikis!

We are going to look at blogs and see if you can spot the differences.

Blogs are useful to some well-known parts of society.

Many TV or radio shows have their own blog pages. These are used by the show producers to tell you more about what is going on and you have your say about how you want the show to change.

These days, blog pages are used instead of the old-fashioned "viewer's letters". Do you remember Terry Wogan and Anne Robinson shows where viewers wrote in to the BBC? These days, there are blog pages to let you do that.

Let's try one at the BBC. Go to their blog pages at the address www.bbc.co.uk/blogs and see what you can find.

Would a blog or a wiki suit you best?

Remember - any sort of web page is only as good as the job you want to do. Think aboutr what you would like to use it for and discuss it with others in the class.

Do you want a diary?

For using the internet as a diary, a blog is by far the best solution. Many people still refer to blogs as an "on-line diary" even if that is not what they are used for.

Do you want some sort of reference?

For using like a book or a dictionary or an encyclopedia or pretty much any otrher source of reference, a wiki is by far the best.

Which one would suit you? Is there something else that you would like to do. What is it? What do you think would be best for it? Remember, it may be that neither a blog nor a wiki would be the best option for your own particular needs.

Summary of discussion.

Task Two - Second task
